Note from the webmaster:  We update this web site at least once a week during our summer concert season.  Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, if you are viewing this page on a summer Monday, what follows will undoubtedly be the information for YESTERDAY'S concert.
For those specifically SEEKING web pages from past concerts, our recent concert archives are now available online.

Jim is a retired Burlington band director who plays the trombone and sometimes the euphonium in our band. He continues to be an active musician and plays in the Southeast Iowa Band, the South Hill Brass (watch for them when the Viking boats dock), the Bullis-Rutter Big Band, and the LaMoines River Ramblers, a traditional (think Dixieland) jazz band.

It's been eleven years! Since 2014, the Nauvoo Pageant Bagpipe Band has been joining us to bring a taste of the Highlands to Burlington and this week they'll be here again for our July 6 concert. The pipers (and drummers and dancers) will begin their performance at 6:30 so you'll want to come early for their always excellent presentation of Scottish music and Highland dancing. Following their performance they'll retire around 7:10 as we set up and then join us to play three selections, Scotland the BraveThe Highland Cathedral, and Amazing Grace.
Jim's selections include the three pieces mentioned above to be performed with the Nauvoo Pageant Bagpipe Band, and the following:  The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key, arranged by Henry Fillmore; Emblem of Unity March by J.J. Richards, America the Beautiful by Samuel Augustus Ward, arranged by Carmen Dragon; Leroy Anderson, A Legacy in Sound by Robert W. Smith including Syncopated ClockBlue Tango, and Bugler's HolidayThe Civil War arranged by James Ployhar including The Battle Cry of FreedomTenting TonightThe Bonnie Blue FlagWhen Johnny Comes Marching HomeDixie, and Battle Hymn of the Republic;  Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar arranged by Calvin Custer; American Flourish by Robert W. Smith; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.

Since this concert's July 6 date is our closest to the Independence Day holiday, the remainder of the concert will be a traditional concert featuring patriotic and Americana selections. Initially, this presented this week's conductor, long-time band member Jim Priebe, with a bit of a dilemma: just how do bagpipes fit in with a patriotic celebration? On reflection, the answer seems simple: as Americans we celebrate both this nation and we value the heritage of our ancestral origins!
